about

Multi-award-winning Sydney-based composer Andrée Greenwell is excited to announce her forthcoming release, Cinéaste. Known for her trailblazer vocal projects, Cinéaste is the first volume on a filmic journey through Greenwell’s many and varied collaborations with directors, theatre makers and musicians.

Originally created for stage and screen, the unfolding sequences of Cinéaste reveal a diversity of style and creative cohesion that speaks to both afficionados of music and film with humour, wit and passion.

Merging chamber orchestras, electronics and instrumental soloists, Greenwell’s elegant sonic miniatures run the gamut of emotion and experience, evoking memories of cinematic genres and epochs in a rapid flow of dreamlike music and sensuality.

From the brutalism of ‘Fire - Instrumental Redux’ (a remix of her song with the late Candy Royalle from Listen to Me), the ironic ‘Langour #2’ where snippets of classical masters collide with Reichian sinewaves, the hypnotic downbeat ‘Secret Texture’, the neoclassic prim of ‘Castlecrag’ or the analogue melancholy of ‘Piano Tendrils’, Andrée stakes out a unique territory through her fusion of creative techniques and personal vision.

Greenwell’s gothic, romantic minimalism pays homage to Erik Satie as well as soundtrack greats such as Bacharach, Michael Nyman, Peter Greenaway, Gus Van Sant, Michel Legrand, Jacques Demy, David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti.

Cinéaste is a kaleidoscopic retrospective not just of Greenwell’s prolific compositions, but of film culture stretching back through decades of style and innovation.

Andrée is one of Australia’s most sought after composers for stage and screen. As artistic director of Green Room Music she is a ground breaker – dreaming up and bringing to life distinctive music composition projects that bring together outstanding music talent.
